What is organic cotton?

Natural cotton is cultivated without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Conversely, conventional cotton relies heavily on chemical fertilizers and pesticides and often involves GMO crops. Many of these chemicals are deemed hazardous to human health and the environment. Additionally, organic cotton is typically grown on smaller-scale farms, allowing for better control over crops and implementing more resource-efficient irrigation systems compared to the larger-scale farms associated with conventional cotton.

Since 2012, our commitment to using only 100% organic cotton has been unwavering in all our denim offerings. In 2017, we extended this dedication to include our entire collection.

What size should I order?

For utmost confidence in selecting the right size, we strongly advise utilizing our 'Virtual Size Guide.' This tool provides precise measurements for each item and enables you to compare them to a reference product from either our online store or one you possess at home. You can locate the 'Virtual Size Guide' on every product page, just below the green "BUY" button. If you're uncertain about how to measure your jeans, refer to this resource for step-by-step instructions!

Are your jeans vegan?

We have discontinued using leather patches on our denim.. After searching for a substitute durable enough to withstand the rigours of denim's lifecycle, we introduced the paper-based jacron. This material comprises cellulosic fibres and acrylic polymers, with the cellulosic fibres in our jacron carrying FSC certification.

The transition from the old patches to the new jacron patches commenced with our Fall 2018 jean collection. However, a few carry-over styles retained the old patches already in production. You can find specific patch information on each product page.

In our commitment to animal-friendly practices, we've urged suppliers to refrain from using chemicals with animal derivatives, such as softeners containing these components. While we may not carry a formal vegan certification and therefore do not label our garments as such, all our jeans are crafted without animal derivatives.

Can I find my previous jeans fit in your collection?

Occasionally, styles come and go as we make way for fresh additions. If your beloved fit has been phased out, fret not. Reach out to our Customer Care team, and we'll gladly help you discover a new favourite! Additionally, you can explore and compare our current selection of jeans in our Jeans Fit Guide.

Will you be getting more stock?

While we strive to replenish high-demand items, this may not always be feasible for limited editions. At present, we do not offer a 'notify me' service for restocks. However, if you have inquiries about a specific product, size, or colour that isn't currently listed, please feel free to reach out to our customer care team for assistance.

Which products are best from an environmental stand point?

The most eco-conscious choice is opting for second-hand items, as it reduces the demand for new resources. That's why our Re-Use denim stands out as an exceptionally sustainable option.

Among our freshly manufactured products, dry jeans typically offer a greener choice environmentally, as they require less water compared to pre-washed denim. However, in terms of sustainability, the optimal strategy is to prolong the lifespan of your clothing, mend it when needed, and return it to us if you no longer require it. Embrace the philosophy of purchasing less and using items for an extended period.

Are your jeans unisex?

Absolutely! All our fits are designed to be suitable for everyone, regardless of gender. Nonetheless, we've introduced certain fits tailored with women in mind, which can be located in the women's section. Nevertheless, these styles are versatile and can also be worn by men with excellent results.

Do your products contain nickel?

We primarily utilize nickel-free organic copper and gunmetal for our buttons and trims.

Ordering & Payment

Ordering & Payment

I am placing and international order, does the price include customs, duties, and/or taxes?

The item price and shipping cost do not cover customs, duties, and taxes. If you're ordering from a country outside the European Union, it's likely that you will incur charges for tax, duty, import, and brokerage fees upon receiving the package. Regrettably, these fees are outside of our influence, and we are unable to shoulder them for our customers. To address this, we subtract the Swedish VAT from your order during checkout to avoid customers being subject to dual taxation from different governments. You'll see this tax deduction reflected in the subtotal during the checkout process.

What is The Jean Makers' policy on confidentiality?

Safeguarding the processing, confidentiality, and security of your personal data holds paramount importance for us. We are dedicated to delivering a tailored experience while respecting your privacy and choices. Detailed information about how The Jean Maker Marketing AB handles your data can be found in our Privacy Policy.

In compliance with GDPR regulations, you have the option to request no further receipt of personalized communications regarding our products and services. Additionally, you possess the right to access and rectify your personal data, as well as the right to request its deletion.

For any additional inquiries or concerns regarding the processing of your personal data or to exercise any of the aforementioned rights, please feel free to reach out to us here.

It is recommended to ensure that your credit or debit card holds sufficient funds before placing an order. Additionally, for security purposes, credit card companies may impose restrictions on foreign and/or online transactions. I can't place and order?

One possible reason for your order not processing is if your bank or credit card company has restrictions on transactions from international websites. The Jean Maker is based in Canada and operates from there.

This occurrence is fairly common and can sometimes be implemented by your bank or credit company without prior notification. It is advisable to reach out to your bank and request the removal of any such restrictions, then attempt to place the order again.

If, for any reason, you encounter difficulties in contacting your bank, you also have the option to use PayPal as a payment method. PayPal is accessible to all consumers at no cost, and signing up for an account is a straightforward process on their platform.

All About Denim

All About Denim

When can I wash my jeans?

We advise wearing your dry denim for a minimum of six months before washing. This is a specific recommendation for our dry denim, aimed at achieving a patina and worn-in appearance. However, it's important to note that breaking in a pair of dry jeans can be a demanding process and may not suit everyone. That's why we also offer pre-washed options. If you opt for pre-washed denim, they have already undergone washing during production and are treated to mimic the appearance of a worn-in pair. As a result, you can wash pre-washed denim as needed.

For detailed instructions on how to wash your dry denim, please click here.

What is dry bleeding or dry crocking?

It's typical for all dry jeans to experience either dry bleeding or dry crocking before being washed a few times. Dry crocking occurs when excess dye rubs off onto another dry fabric. Additionally, if your jeans get wet during their initial use, for instance, due to rain, the colour may bleed onto other textiles like underwear.

To address dry bleeding, we recommend washing the jeans once, following the instructions provided on the inside labels. Should you have any additional inquiries about dry bleeding, washing, or any other matters, please don't hesitate to reach out via email. We're always here to assist you.

What is selvedge?

Selvage, also known as selvedge, typically denotes the self-bound edge of a fabric piece that secures its edge and prevents fraying. Selvage denim is woven on traditional shuttle looms, where a single continuous weft thread is passed back and forth across the loom. These fabrics tend to be narrower than those woven with projectile technology, typically measuring around 80cm in width. The coloured thread within the selvage was a distinguishing feature for manufacturers producing denim for various brands. We proudly feature our distinctive orange selvage ID.

Explore our assortment of selvage here.

How do I best store my denim?

To preserve the colour, refrain from storing your jeans in direct sunlight.

My jeans shrunk, what can I do?

As indicated on the care label, dry jeans typically experience a shrinkage of approximately 3%. However, this percentage may vary based on factors such as washing temperature, whether stretching was performed, and the duration of use before the initial wash. Should you find that your jeans have shrunk excessively, you can opt for a brief rinse in lukewarm water with a touch of fabric softener. While they dry, make sure to stretch them thoroughly in all directions several times. This process will help regain some of the lost width and length.

Can you help me re-dye my black jeans?

While we do not offer a re-dyeing service, we've learned that it's pretty manageable to re-dye them yourself. Purchase textile colour dye and follow the provided instructions. You can often find dye for domestic use at supermarkets, and it's straightforward to use in a washing machine.

A friendly tip: remember to clean the washing machine afterwards. It's best to run an empty wash cycle (preferably at 40°C) to eliminate any potential dye residue.

Additionally, when selecting the dye, opt for the most eco-friendly alternative.

We highly recommend considering our black alternative, "Ever Black." This denim maintains its deep black hue for up to 40 (or more) home washings.

How should I wash my black jeans?

To maintain the integrity of black denim and prevent the occurrence of white lines, often known as "snake skin," please refrain from the following practices:

  1. Avoid tumble drying or washing the jeans without turning them inside out. The machine's abrasion can lead to colour transfer and create lines.

  2. Do not leave the jeans in a wet, wrinkled state in the washing machine, and ensure they are adequately flattened when hung up to dry.

  3. Refrain from washing with a detergent that contains a bleaching agent.

  4. Avoid washing with fabric softener.

I don't want to wash my jeans yet, what can I do to keep them fresh?

Give your jeans a breath of fresh air by hanging them outside on a chilly, dry night. Alternatively, you can hang them in your bathroom while you take a shower to let them absorb a bit of moisture, then allow them to air out. This method will help refresh them.

Regarding the age-old myth of placing jeans in the freezer, find out if it works here.

What is dry denim?

Dry denim, also known as "raw" denim or unwashed denim, pertains to a pair of untreated denim, meaning they haven't undergone any washing or bleaching processes. Rather than achieving a worn-in appearance through factory treatment, you take on the task of breaking in these jeans yourself. It's a prolonged dedication, and the results will be shaped by how frequently you wear them. Over time, you'll acquire a unique pair of jeans adorned with whiskers, honeycombs, and fading that mirror your lifestyle.

For further insights on dry denim, you can explore more here.

How can I avoid crotch rips?

Crotch rips are primarily a result of wear and tear and how you wear your denim, rather than an indication of poor quality. A well-fitting pair experiences less friction. It's advisable to avoid wearing your jeans too low on the hip, as this heightens the likelihood of friction when walking and moving.

For additional information, click here.

What is ounce/oz?

"Oz" stands for ounce per square yard, which is the unit of measurement for denim weight. Denim can be categorized into different weight classes: lightweights range from 10-11oz, midweights from 11-13oz, and heavyweights start from there and go up.

Are your jeans sanforized?

Indeed, all jeans from The Jean Maker are sanforized, which means they are pre-shrunk.

Sanforization is a process applied to cotton fabrics to minimize the amount of shrinkage that would naturally occur after the initial wash. This process involves feeding the fabric into a sanforizing machine, where it is treated with water or steam to induce shrinkage. It is then pressed against a heated rubber band to relax and re-contract the fibres.

As a result, the fabric is guaranteed to shrink no more than 5% after its first wash, in contrast to potentially 10% for unsanforized fabrics.
