Buying jeans online shouldn't feel like a gamble.

At The Jean Maker, we believe that understanding how a pair of jeans is measured is the key to finding a fit you'll love. Whether you're looking for a slim silhouette, a classic straight leg, or a more relaxed fit, knowing your measurements helps you choose with confidence.

This Japanese Selvedge Denim Fit Guide explains exactly how we measure our jeans, what each measurement means, and how to compare our sizing charts to a pair of jeans you already own.

Why Measurements Matter More Than Tagged Size

The reality is that a tagged size 32 can fit differently from one brand to another.

That's why we recommend comparing actual garment measurements instead of relying solely on the size printed on the label.

The easiest method is to take your favourite pair of jeans, lay them flat on a table, and compare the measurements to the charts found in our Fit Guide.

This approach removes the guesswork and helps ensure the best possible fit.

How We Measure Our Jeans / Japanese Selvedge Denim Fit Guide

Every pair of The Jean Maker jeans is measured by hand.

Waistband

Measured straight across the top of the waistband and doubled.

The waistband measurement determines how the jeans will fit around your waist.

Front Rise

Measured from the crotch seam to the top of the front waistband.

The front rise affects where the jeans sit on your body and how much room they provide through the

upper block.

Hip

Measured across the widest part of the seat and doubled.

This measurement helps determine comfort through the hips and seat.

Back Rise

Measured from the crotch seam to the top of the rear waistband.

The back rise influences overall comfort and coverage.

Thigh

Measured approximately one inch below the crotch seam.

A critical measurement for mobility and comfort.

Knee

Measured midway between the crotch and leg opening.

This helps define the overall shape of the leg.

Inseam

Measured from the crotch seam to the hem.

The inseam determines the finished length of the jeans.

Leg Opening

Measured across the bottom hem and doubled.

This measurement affects how slim, straight, or relaxed the jeans appear below the knee.

How to Measure a Pair of Jeans at Home

  1. Lay your jeans flat on a hard surface.

  2. Smooth out wrinkles without stretching the fabric.

  3. Measure the waistband, rise, thigh, knee, inseam, and leg opening.

  4. Compare your measurements to The Jean Maker size charts.

  5. Choose the size that most closely matches your favourite pair.

What Makes Japanese Selvedge Denim Different?

Unlike mass-produced denim, Japanese selvedge denim is woven on traditional shuttle looms, creating a tighter weave and unique character.

Over time, the fabric softens, conforms to your body, and develops fades that are unique to the wearer.

This means your jeans become more comfortable and personal with every wear.
